"Ban it Now"
How We Got Our Roots
Hate-Free Schools Coalition formed in Orange County North Carolina in 2016. Our organization led a community push to ban the confederate flag, a symbol of enduring hate and alienation, from Orange County Schools. After an eight-month battle, the Orange County School Board banned the confederate flag, in addition to other symbols of hate and derision, at the August 14, 2017 school board meeting.
Through the work, we built a strong community dedicated to addressing racial inequities in our schools and community. Our work continues through the expansion of targeted equity work within Orange County, and by being a resource for other communities to lead their own way toward racial equity.
